Momma, Did You Hear the News?

File this under, “Books I wish I didn’t need to read to my kids but also incredibly thankful they are available.” This book is written it taste and sensitivity to help parents talk with their children about police safety. The author does a great job at emphasizing that the parents in the story respect and appreciate the officers of our country, while also educating their children on how to get home safe.

I read this with both my kids and they each expressed afterwards that they feel more prepared and less scared regarding police interactions. Honestly, I think all families should read this book regardless of race. When police interact with citizens, they expect certain behaviors that we need to teach our kids about.

We loved the fact that this picture book rhymed, and the illustrations and dialog allowed for open discussion and validations of feelings relating to this topic.  The illustrations were a little fuzzy, but the message is what I was here for. The five steps I think could have been simplified a bit more for easier memorization but my 9 & 11 year olds seemed to get it. Again, I just want to emphasize that this is not an antipolice book; it is a teaching resource for all kids.
