Spells for Forgetting – 4 Star Review

Adrienne Young is a favorite author of mine and I love how atmospheric all her books are. This is her first adult novel, and while it has her signature air of storytelling this book is starkly different than her YA books. I think her existing reader base will love it. However, I suspect it may capture a new set of readers than her YA books have, and will be eager for her fan base to expand!

The pacing of the novel was a slow-burn mystery surrounding the intimate island community of Saiorse. The reader embarks on a journey of unraveling skeletons of the past which include the orchard fire and death that haunt the island. Alternate chapters bounce between this event and the present day return of an old resident and the key suspect of the crime.

I thoroughly enjoyed the hints of magical realism and feel like the setting of the novel encapsulates a fall atmosphere perfectly. The story is told from an array of POVs which was very interesting and worked well with the sense of community this island presented.

This was a fun story to read, and I am excited to see how other readers receive it this fall. Forever a fan of Young, I look forward to more releases of both her YA and Adult novels for my bookshelves. I’d love to hear your thoughts when you read this one.
