This Close to Okay by Leesa Cross-Smith

This Close to Okay is a story where Tallie makes it her mission to help Emmett, but in return finds that her mission has helped her as well.

Therapist Tallie saves Emmett from the bridge he contemplates jumping from one night. She didnโ€™t know this man at all, but talks him โ€œoff the ledge.โ€ She takes him to her home and is that listening ear we sometimes need.  However, she failed to mention that she is a licensed therapist using her profession to keep Emmett talking to get to the root of why he decided to step on the bridge that night. Emmett also flips the script and gets Tallie to talking about her divorce, ex-husband and issues in her previous marriage. They both end up holding back on some truths.

While both Tallie and Emmett give glimpses of their lives, of course they hold back and withhold secrets from each other. They are strangers to each other. Tallie allows Emmett to sleep on her couch for the weekend and while his back is turned, she snoops in his pockets and bag to find out more about this mystery man in hopes to figure out the why. She does find clues, but they donโ€™t fully explain themselves so she continues to dig. All the while, Mr. Emmett also snoops on Tallieโ€™s computer while sheโ€™s sleeping. He also finds secrets as well as emails to/from her ex-husband. What he does is crazy and eventually backfires and brings both of their secrets to light!

Initially reading this book, I felt this to be so unrealistic. I mean what woman would bring a strange man, a man who was about to attempt suicide, back to her home to stay for the weekend? As I read I continually shook my head until the story continued on. I fell in love with it! As the secrets were spilled they touched my heart to the core. This story is not just about saving Emmett from his suicidal thoughts and actions, but about opening up and talking about what is hurting you. Both Emmett and Tallie had hurtful things in their pasts that they needed that shoulder to cry on and that listening ear. We all need that one person; that listening ear to get our feelings out. Sometimes, the person can be a complete stranger, and thatโ€™s ok as we need that release to let go of those harmful feelings that can bring us down to our lowest points.
