White Smoke – 5 Star Review

Wow. I must say that I didn’t know what I was getting into with this book. Tiffany is a great author and I will read anything she puts into the universe. I think that White Smoke encompasses exactly what Tiffany wanted it to.  Some authors just tell us stories they crafted in their heads. Others, like Tiffany, tell us history and how far we as humans still need to go.

Okay, so first this is YA horror at its finest. It’s creepy and eerie. Nail-biting and terrifying. Marigold is a teen with REAL teen struggles. She is a character that is easy to relate to. Her anxiety and messy feelings about bed bugs (MUST READ TO UNDERSTAND) are perfect combos to build a teen character with.

The subject of this book is WAY bigger than a ghost story that keeps you up at night. It talks about gentrification and wrongfully imprisoned Black people for minor weed crimes. She yells about the lack of male Black boys in high school and she carefully wove in the intricacies of complicated mixed-race families.

I will be jumping at every creak or thump in my house for the rest of the day. My heart was pounding throughout the story and was on the edge of my seat to know the truth. Also the descriptions in this book!!! I smelled everything and felt everything Marigold did. And that has everything to do with Tiffany’s writing.

I loved this story and if you didn’t I think you missed the message.
